Embedded AI evaluators won’t be an easy solution, Hugging Face’s policy chief says

Irene Solaiman, Hugging Face’s chief policy officer, argues that current AI model benchmarking methods are too immature and inconsistent to be fully trusted. She emphasizes that reproducibility is a critical hurdle, noting that access to open weights is essential for verifying evaluation results. The industry currently lacks a standardized way to compare different tests, causing them to become ineffective quickly. While there is growing interest in embedded third-party evaluators, doubts remain regarding their neutrality and qualifications, as seen with recent controversies at Anthropic. Evaluations are shifting focus from isolated models to holistic systems, including the user harness and agentic capabilities. Solaiman highlights that testing these complex agent environments is significantly more difficult and expensive than traditional model benchmarks. Consequently, she calls for a more uniform, industry-wide approach to ensure benchmarking remains a useful tool for assessing AI performance.
