King Charles hosted a private summit at Dumfries House with prominent AI and government figures, including Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, representatives of OpenAI and Anthropic, the U.K.’s new AI minister Kanishka Narayan, the head of the U.K.’s foreign intelligence service, and papal AI adviser Paolo Benanti. He urged participants to establish controls over AI “before it’s too late,” describing the technology as both intriguing and deeply concerning. Charles acknowledged AI’s potential to improve and save lives while warning of existential dangers if it develops harmful capabilities or falls into the wrong hands. He called for international cooperation and consensus to ensure AI serves humanity, communities, and the natural world. The king reportedly stayed for about 20 minutes, after which the guests continued their discussions; OpenAI sent CFO Sarah Friar and Anthropic sent global affairs chief Tino Cuéllar. The summit came amid renewed debate over slowing AI development, disagreements among technology leaders and politicians, and continuing concerns about AI safety and the industry’s future.
