Figma co-founder Dylan Field thinks MCP is not a perfect protocol
techcrunch ·
Figma co-founder Dylan Field has expressed reservations about the Model Context Protocol (MCP), stating that it is not a perfect standard despite the company's decision to expand its support for the open-source framework. At Figma's first Config conference in India, the firm announced partnerships with 20 new MCP integrations, including major players like Linear, Notion, and Meta Muse. Field previously criticized Anthropic, the creators of MCP, for not exposing their own cloud resources through the protocol, highlighting issues of asymmetric context sharing. During a media briefing, he clarified that while Figma aims to be open, the current iteration of MCP favors frontier labs and requires significant improvement. The company remains cautious about full openness due to concerns regarding potential data abuse as more information is exposed. Although most users have benign intentions, Figma must account for malicious risks associated with broader data accessibility. Field later confirmed that Figma plans to support Pi, addressing earlier criticisms from MCP co-creators.
