Florida wants a court to stop ChatGPT from pretending to be human and talking to kids

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has filed a motion seeking a court injunction to prevent OpenAI from allowing ChatGPT to mimic human behavior and interact with minors. The state argues that the AI uses first-person language and simulated emotions to create deceptive friendships, primarily to maintain user engagement and gather training data. This legal action follows an earlier lawsuit in June where Florida accused OpenAI of providing dangerous information to mass shooters and promoting self-harm. Although OpenAI recently introduced parental controls for teenagers following a tragic incident involving a minor, Florida officials believe these measures are insufficient. The new motion specifically requests that OpenAI be barred from developing new models without third-party approved safety guardrails. In response, OpenAI spokesperson Drew Pusateri stated that the company has paused training on its most capable models and is willing to collaborate on industry-wide AI guidelines. As of now, no court ruling has been issued regarding this preliminary injunction request.
