Give Your Coding Agents a Memory You Own
huggingface ·
The article introduces funes, an open-source memory layer that gives coding agents like Claude Code, Codex, pi, and Hermes a durable record of past sessions. It is installed as a single binary, indexes completed agent turns locally, and provides recall and get tools so agents can retrieve earlier reasoning without manually pasting context. Because all supported agents write to the same shape, one shared memory can be used across different agents and machines, and it can be published as a private or public Hugging Face dataset. The memory is append-only and the original trace text is preserved, with credentials redacted during indexing and a second scan before publishing. The authors also provide an ask command for direct questions, and they published a memory of funes development as an example. A benchmark comparing recall to compaction and written handoffs found that recall was 8x and 4x cheaper on the two tasks, while compaction sometimes missed findings. The project is built on open-source embedding models, Lance datasets, and Hub caching, and it is available at github.com/huggingface/funes.
