Google bets Gemini can turn casual players into game developers with new Playground feature
decoder ·
Google has launched Playground, a browser-based AI platform that allows adults in the US to create games using only text input without requiring coding skills. The system utilizes Google's Gemini, Nano Banana, and Lyria models to let users tweak game rules, physics, characters, and environments through interactive dialogue. Users can immediately test their creations and share finished games via links or publish them in a public gallery. While the platform is free, Google One subscribers receive higher weekly usage limits based on their subscription plans. Published content undergoes safety reviews aligned with Google's community guidelines. In a related announcement, Google and Unity introduced Unity Spark, an AI tool for professional developers that provides access to the Unity Asset Store. Unity CEO Matt Bromberg stated that Spark aims to help gamers and artists who have creative ideas but lack technical development skills. This closed beta release follows similar AI-powered game-building initiatives from competitors like Meta and Roblox.
