Google brings agentic AI to Gemini, starting with businesses
techcrunch ·
Google has announced the launch of an agentic AI feature for its Gemini platform, designed to allow the system to execute tasks on behalf of users rather than just answering questions. Initially targeting businesses, this unified agent can plan work, use custom skills, and interact with internal systems like Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 to achieve specific objectives. CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted that over one billion monthly active users already engage with Gemini, with nearly 90% of Fortune 100 companies using the enterprise version. The agent operates as a distinct coworker with its own workspace account, email, and audit trail, enabling it to manage schedules, book travel, and generate code securely. Users can monitor progress through a tasks inbox interface and have the flexibility to select from various models, including third-party options like Anthropic's Claude. Early testers include major brands such as PayPal, Shopify, and On, while new spending controls aim to help enterprises manage costs effectively. This strategic rollout prioritizes corporate security and scalability before eventually expanding to consumer markets.
