Google DeepMind AI Agents Beat Minecraft… After 27 Hours And 605 ‘Deaths’
aiinsider ·
Four Google DeepMind AI agents successfully defeated Minecraft’s Ender Dragon after 27 hours and 14 minutes of autonomous play. The system, powered by Gemini 4 Argon, generated 2,783 JavaScript programs to coordinate tasks such as resource gathering, tool crafting, and combat without human intervention during the session. Despite achieving victory, the process was inefficient, resulting in 605 character deaths and a computational cost estimated between $520 and $1,040. The agents demonstrated advanced capabilities by dividing labor, sharing resources through virtual chests, and correcting each other's errors via shared memory. However, the study notes significant limitations, including the use of Easy difficulty settings and access to detailed game data that bypasses visual input challenges. Researchers emphasize that while this showcases long-term planning and error recovery, it does not yet prove reliability for complex enterprise software development. The experiment highlights both the potential and current inefficiencies of general-purpose AI coding agents in sustained, multi-step environments.
