Google drops Gems for Skills, joining OpenAI and Anthropic in the shift to agent-ready prompt formats
decoder ·
Google is replacing its 'Gems' feature with a new capability called 'Skills' in Gemini chat, aligning with industry trends set by OpenAI and Anthropic. Skills are detailed prompts designed for specific tasks that users can save, invoke via slash commands, or generate automatically from previous conversations. This format originated with Anthropic as an open standard and allows for chaining multiple skills to handle complex workflows involving text, PDFs, and images. As part of this transition, Google will sunset Gems for personal accounts in November 2026, with enterprise and education versions following in 2027. Existing Gems will be automatically converted into Skills during the migration process. Additionally, Google is discontinuing Opal, its AI mini-app experiment, at the same time. Future updates will include sharing capabilities, Google Drive integration, and support for Workspace customers across various sectors.
