At the Android Dev Summit, Google announced significant updates to its development ecosystem, primarily focusing on integrating third-party AI agents into Android Studio. Through a new "Bring Your Own Agent" feature, developers can now utilize over 40 external coding tools, including Anthropic's Claude and OpenAI's Codex, directly within the IDE. To improve efficiency, Google introduced enhanced terminal tools that allow agents to render UI previews without launching emulators, reportedly reducing token usage by up to three times. On the application side, new APIs powered by Gemini Nano 4 enable local on-device processing and allow apps to connect seamlessly with system-wide agents via the Model Context Protocol. Additionally, Google unveiled the XREAL AURA smart glasses, which run Android XR and use Gemini to analyze the real-world environment while displaying virtual workspaces. These hardware and software advancements aim to streamline development workflows and expand the capabilities of AI-driven mobile experiences.
