Google Play Lets Users Run Private Vibe-Coded Apps on Android
aiinsider ·
Google has introduced a new feature on Android that allows users to run privately built, AI-generated applications directly through Google Play without making them publicly available. This update enables creators to develop apps using Google AI Studio and install them on their devices using their standard Google accounts, keeping the software hidden from public search results. Previously, running personal native apps required publishing to the entire Play Store audience, which often drove developers toward web-based solutions instead. The initiative is currently restricted to U.S. users aged 18 and older, though all personal apps must still adhere to Google Play’s existing safety policies. Sam Bright, Google’s VP for Google Play, stated that this shift reflects a future where apps are more personal, secure, and accessible to everyday builders rather than just professional developers. In the near future, users will be able to share these private creations with trusted contacts, and popular apps may eventually undergo reviews for public release. Additionally, Google is expanding its AI capabilities within Play by introducing features like Game Finder and deeper integration with Gemini.
