Google Play now supports private, vibe-coded apps built just for you
techcrunch ·
Google Play has introduced a new feature allowing users to run private, AI-generated 'vibe-coded' applications directly on their Android devices without publishing them publicly. These personal apps remain invisible in search results and are accessible only to the creator, addressing previous barriers where users had to make apps public for others to use them. Initially available to U.S. users aged 18 and older, this functionality enables individuals to build native Android apps via Google AI Studio for specific personal needs while still adhering to existing store policies. Looking ahead, Google plans to expand sharing capabilities so users can distribute these apps to trusted friends and family groups before potentially moving them to the public store after safety reviews. In addition to private app support, the update includes enhanced gaming features such as an AI-driven Game Finder recommendation engine and community interaction tools like Sprints and Community Posts. The platform's AI assistant, Ask Play, is also being upgraded to provide detailed comparisons between similar applications, further integrating with Gemini conversations. Furthermore, Google is launching a new age range feature that allows parents to share approximate age data with developers to ensure age-appropriate content without revealing exact birthdates. These updates collectively signal a shift toward more personalized, secure, and user-centric app experiences within the Google Play ecosystem.
