Google releases a new local-first Granola competitor
techcrunch ·
Google has released a new AI-powered meeting note-taking application called Google AI Edge Foresight, positioning it as a direct competitor to tools like Granola. This Mac app is designed to operate entirely offline by utilizing the on-device EmbeddingGemma 2 model with 740 million parameters. The interface features a split-screen view that allows users to write manual shorthand notes while simultaneously generating AI-transcribed summaries. Users can also interact with a Gemma 4-powered assistant to answer questions based on uploaded documents such as PDFs and Microsoft Office files. The application is optimized for Apple Silicon hardware, ensuring functionality without an internet connection during travel or in disconnected environments. While previous experimental dictation tools from Google did not achieve mainstream adoption, this release highlights the capabilities of its offline Gemma models. The competitive landscape for AI note-takers continues to expand with recent entries from companies like Wispr, Calendly, and Superhuman.
