Google’s $899 Googlebook is a bet that you’ll buy a new laptop for Gemini
techcrunch ·
Google has announced that its new AI-powered laptop, the Googlebook, is available for pre-order at $899, aiming to replace traditional Chromebooks by integrating Gemini AI capabilities directly into the hardware. The device runs on Android OS with a desktop Chrome browser and features unique tools like Magic Cursor, which uses an AI pointer to interact with content, and Rambler, which refines messy voice notes into readable text. While these features offer enhancements over standard computing, critics note they may not be sufficient standalone reasons for consumers to upgrade, especially given existing mobile alternatives like Circle to Search. A significant strategic goal for Google is to capture the K-12 education market, potentially transitioning millions of existing Chromebook users toward Gemini AI services. The launch includes a promotional bundle with 12 months of Google AI Pro, cloud storage, and subscriptions to YouTube Premium and Adobe Photoshop. Hardware specifications vary by manufacturer but generally include high-end displays, haptic trackpads, and processors from Intel or Qualcomm paired with dedicated NPUs. Pre-orders are currently open through various retailers, with general availability scheduled for early October in multiple countries.
