Google's new Gemini tiers cut free users to its weakest model and lock $5/month subscribers out of Pro

Starting in October 2026, Google is restructuring its Gemini model access for personal accounts, significantly reducing capabilities for free and lower-tier subscribers. Free users will be restricted to the weakest model, Flash-Lite, losing access to the more powerful Flash and Pro models that were previously available. Similarly, AI Plus subscribers paying $4.99 per month will no longer have access to the Pro tier and will only retain access to Flash-Lite and Flash. To utilize all three models, including Pro, users must now subscribe to either the AI Pro plan at $19.99/month or the AI Ultra plan priced between $99.99 and $199.99/month. This new structure mirrors OpenAI's freemium approach with ChatGPT, effectively pushing higher-performance features behind a paywall. The real-world impact on casual users is expected to be minimal, as most are unaware of the specific underlying models they use. However, this move may be preparing the infrastructure for the upcoming Gemini 4 Argon, which could incur higher operational costs.
