Google’s new SynthID website can identify AI-generated media
techcrunch ·
Google has launched a public website allowing anyone to verify whether images, videos, or audio clips are AI-generated. Previously available only to select professionals during testing at Google I/O last year, the tool is now open to the general public. The platform supports a wide range of formats for images, including JPG and PNG, as well as various video and audio file types. Google utilizes its SynthID technology, introduced in 2023, to watermark content produced by its own models like Nano Banana, Veo, and Lyria. Other major tech companies such as OpenAI, NVIDIA, and Kakao also support SynthID, while Apple is expected to add support soon. Verification capabilities are integrated directly into the Gemini app and Google Chrome, with users currently making one million verification requests daily. Although competitors like Microsoft and Meta have their own watermarking standards, these tools are not always reliable.
