Google has launched the Suncatcher project, which aims to deploy AI data centers in orbit powered by solar energy. An experimental satellite named MVP is scheduled to launch on October 1 via a SpaceX Falcon 9 from California's Vandenberg Space Force Base. Built and tested at Planet Labs in San Francisco, this refrigerator-sized unit is designed to handle basic AI queries using significant computing power. While competitors like SpaceX and Blue Origin are also exploring orbital infrastructure, Google acknowledges substantial technical and economic hurdles. Travis Beals estimates that approximately 10,000 satellites would be required to match the capacity of a single one-gigawatt ground-based data center. Key challenges include the lack of atmospheric cooling, vulnerability to cosmic radiation, and high launch costs. Jeff Bezos suggests it may take up to 20 years for space-based data centers to become more cost-effective than terrestrial alternatives.
