Google says 180 billion images and videos now carry SynthID watermarks as detector goes public

Google has officially launched the public version of its SynthID Detector, allowing anyone to verify if images, videos, or audio files were generated by AI. The tool identifies invisible watermarks embedded in content created by Google's models, such as Gemini, Veo, and Lyria, as well as those from partners like OpenAI, Nvidia, and Kakao. It supports common file formats including JPG, PNG, MP4, and MP3. Google reports that over 180 billion images and videos currently carry these SynthID watermarks. While the detector is widely accessible, it specifically flags only content with SynthID marks rather than serving as a universal AI detection system. Integration of this technology is already present in Google Search, the Gemini app, and Chrome, which processes approximately one million verification requests daily. Apple is also expected to adopt the technology soon. This move highlights the growing industry standard for watermarking AI-generated media to ensure transparency.
