Google Sends Its First TPU Into Orbit to Test Space-Based AI Compute
aiinsider ·
Google has launched its first Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) into orbit aboard a Planet Labs satellite, marking a significant step in testing space-based AI compute capabilities. The prototype mission, lifted off by a SpaceX rocket from California, aims to verify if the chip can operate effectively in the harsh environment of space. Key challenges include managing continuous power draw of one kilowatt and maintaining adequate cooling for the hardware. Travis Beals, manager of Google’s Project Suncatcher, noted that ground tests cannot fully replicate orbital conditions, necessitating this real-world validation. The TPU will run AI models in short 15-minute bursts to protect thermal and power systems during this initial phase. Looking ahead, Google plans to deploy two linked satellites next year for heavier workloads, with a long-term vision of an 81-satellite orbital data center. A peer-reviewed white paper suggests that while radiation-hardened chips can handle inference workloads over five years, they remain unsuitable for massive training runs.
