Google takes Dreambeans to India in bid to bring AI-generated personal stories to the masses
techcrunch ·
Google has launched its experimental AI app Dreambeans in India, marking its first international expansion beyond the United States. The app generates personalized visual stories by analyzing data from connected Google services such as Calendar, Gmail, Photos, and YouTube without requiring user prompts. To accommodate the local market, Dreambeans supports 13 Indian languages including Hindi, Tamil, and Bengali, alongside English. Despite this linguistic support, users can currently select only one language for story generation, which may limit appeal in regions where code-switching like Hinglish is common. The launch follows a U.S. debut in June that saw nearly 55,000 downloads, though recent figures indicate a significant drop in monthly activity. Privacy concerns remain relevant as the app accesses sensitive personal information, although Google allows users to control data connections and delete their history. Additionally, the proactive nature of the app carries risks of surfacing potentially upsetting memories, prompting features that let users filter specific subjects.
