Google tests buying from Walmart-owned Flipkart through Gemini and AI Mode in India
techcrunch ·
Google is currently testing a feature in India that allows users to purchase products from Walmart-owned Flipkart directly within the Gemini and AI Mode interfaces. This new capability introduces a "Buy" button on select product listings, enabling shoppers to proceed to a Flipkart-branded checkout flow without leaving the AI environment. The initial test is limited to specific users and categories such as smartphones and electronics, with plans for a broader rollout later in October ahead of the festive shopping season. This move aligns with Google's strategy to expand its AI services beyond product discovery into direct transactions, competing with rivals like OpenAI who are also integrating commerce features. Although Google previously introduced the Universal Commerce Protocol for AI-driven purchases, this specific Flipkart integration appears to utilize different technology by redirecting users to the retailer's own checkout system. Google holds a minority stake in Flipkart through a $350 million investment made in 2024, strengthening their existing technological partnership. While competitors like Amazon appear in search results, they do not currently offer the same direct purchasing option through Google's AI tools.
