Govern AI agent tool access with Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Gateway
aws ·
The article discusses using Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Gateway to centrally govern how AI agents access internal tools, motivated by common customer concerns about which agents have data access, who granted it, and potential exposure from leaked credentials. It identifies five structural problems in enterprise MCP deployments: credential sprawl, policy drift, audit gaps, cost opacity, and shadow IT. The proposed approach is a four-scope maturity journey—Connect, Control, Catalog, Harden—where each scope provides standalone value. Scope 1 (Connect) establishes a minimal gateway with Cognito JWT authentication, centralized credentials, and CloudTrail/CloudWatch auditing. Scope 2 (Control) adds identity-aware authorization via Cedar RBAC/ABAC, PII redaction with Amazon Bedrock Guardrails, user consent through 3LO, and dynamic client registration. Scope 3 (Catalog) enables self-service tool discovery and publishing, while Scope 4 (Harden) adds private connectivity, dashboards, and multi-Region failover for larger deployments. The article includes implementation snippets for creating the gateway and registering an AWS Lambda target as an MCP tool.
