GPT-6 Astra Is Here—and OpenAI Thinks It May Kick Off the AGI Era
wired ·
OpenAI has announced GPT-6 Astra, its next-generation AI model, claiming it is state of the art at using computers and web browsers, writing software, and solving difficult math problems. The company will roll it out to paid customers in the coming days, starting with enterprise clients and then ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Business subscribers. OpenAI executives expressed strong confidence, with president Greg Brockman saying the world may now be in the era of artificial general intelligence and that this model might be the one people later point to as AGI's creation. The release comes at a critical time as OpenAI seeks to advance technology and boost sales before a planned IPO while facing competition from rival Anthropic. OpenAI says GPT-6 Astra is the world's best computer-use model, performing tasks like booking DMV appointments and apartment hunting faster than humans in tests. The company also describes the model as its most safe and aligned, but chief scientist Jakub Pachocki noted that monitoring advanced AI models is becoming harder and could constrain further development if confidence in alignment monitoring cannot be maintained.
