GPT-6 Astra is the first model making OpenAI willing to declare the "AGI era"

OpenAI has released GPT-6 Astra, its most advanced model, which company president Greg Brockman said may already qualify as AGI or be close to it. The rollout begins with selected organizations and expands to paying ChatGPT users and cloud/API customers in the coming days. According to OpenAI benchmarks, Astra outperforms its predecessor GPT-5.6 Sol and Anthropic's Fable 5 models in areas such as logic, math, software engineering, and computer use. OpenAI notes Astra is the first model rated as "critical" under its Preparedness Framework, owing to its ability to find previously unknown vulnerabilities; it scored 100% on ExploitBench and discovered two zero-days during testing. The strongest cybersecurity capabilities are initially limited to trusted defender programs. Astra's per-token price is about 2.5 times higher than Sol's, though OpenAI argues the cost per completed task can be lower. Brockman said the path to AGI has been gradual rather than a single defining event, but closed the briefing by declaring, "Welcome to the AGI era."
