Guest Post: Why Founder-Led Thought Leadership And PR Both Fail For AI Startups
aiinsider ·
In this guest post, Mark M.J. Scott argues that both founder-led thought leadership and traditional PR fail for AI startups because they violate the principle that trust is conferred by others, not claimed by the party with a financial stake. He contends that typical coverage quotes only founders and investors, who have direct financial interest, while enterprise buyers trust coworkers, management, existing vendors, industry peers, and analysts far more than vendor representatives. Rather than abandoning these efforts, Scott advises founders to redirect activities such as media comments, analyst briefings, conference panels, and white papers toward clients and trusted partners who can independently validate the startup's claims. He also suggests replacing impressions-based metrics with two measures: the number of influential, financially disinterested people publicly endorsing the company, and the number of pieces of output sales teams actually use in live deals. Scott frames this approach as “market shaping,” which sequences credible third-party voices to build trust that supports growth. He concludes that while founders define the thesis, they cannot confirm it, and the market will consolidate around the names buyers can defend choosing.
