HackerRank’s AI interviewer offers a glimpse into what job interviews could become
techcrunch ·
HackerRank has officially launched Chakra, an AI interviewer designed to evaluate candidates by observing their problem-solving process rather than just their final output. After six months of beta testing involving over 500,000 interviews with companies like Snowflake and Capgemini, the tool is now generally available to customers. The system assesses critical thinking, judgment, and "AI fluency" by allowing candidates to use an integrated AI assistant while working through real-world coding tasks. This approach consolidates what were previously three separate hiring rounds into a single interaction, streamlining the recruitment workflow. HackerRank reports that providing AI access during interviews actually reduced suspicious activity flags by 70% to 80%, as it removes the incentive for secret cheating. CEO Vivek Ravisankar positions this shift as a necessary evolution from traditional coding challenges, comparing it to Apple's transition from iPod to iPhone. While the AI scores candidates based on consistent rubrics to potentially reduce human bias, the company maintains that final hiring decisions remain with humans. Despite these benefits, the technology faces regulatory scrutiny regarding algorithmic bias, requiring compliance with local laws such as those in New York City.
