Harvard’s $699 startup bootcamp offers AI avatars of its instructors

Harvard Business School is offering an eight-week, $699 bootcamp for entrepreneurs called HBS Foundry that incorporates AI avatars of its instructors. These avatars, created by startup HeyGen, provide feedback during simulated practice pitches and board meetings, while live sessions still feature real instructors. A New York Times reporter tested the experience by pitching a fictional 'Uber for bananas' idea to an AI copy of investor Jeff Bussgang, who, along with his digital likeness, was unimpressed; the avatar also displayed a frozen smile. According to project director Katharina Rings, the AI component initially started as a chatbot concept but evolved into a more guided experience after student feedback. Bootcamp participants reportedly appreciate the avatars, and although Bussgang calls his digital version 'creepy,' he notes that his students love it. The program reflects Harvard's broader effort to expand its reach through AI-enhanced learning tools.
