Health Care Workers Are Tired of Cleaning Up Palantir’s Mess
wired ·
Healthcare workers at HCA Healthcare are expressing significant frustration with Timpani, an AI scheduling tool co-developed with Palantir that has been deployed across approximately 130 of the hospital chain's locations. Nurses report that the software frequently ignores their shift preferences, resulting in back-to-back shifts, understaffing, and a lack of experienced senior staff during critical times. This automated system has led to increased burnout, higher rates of call-outs, and concerns that patient care is being compromised due to exhausted and imbalanced teams. While HCA executives maintain that human managers retain final decision-making power and that the tool improves efficiency, staff members argue that the algorithm overrides clinical judgment and human oversight. Similar scheduling errors and patient data mismatches have also been reported at Rayus Radiology, another organization using Palantir’s Foundry platform. The controversy highlights growing tensions between healthcare providers seeking to automate operations through AI and frontline workers who feel their well-being and professional expertise are being disregarded. Union leaders at HCA have filed grievances against the company, alleging that the technology fails to honor scheduling preferences and contributes to workplace injuries and staff turnover.
