Healthleap raises $38M for its AI that flags hospital patients who may need a closer look

Healthleap, a health technology startup founded in South Africa by siblings Jemima and Josiah Meyer, has secured $38 million in seed and Series A funding. The financing includes an $8 million seed round co-led by Sequoia Capital and First Round Capital, alongside a $30 million Series A led by Hummingbird Ventures. The company utilizes AI to analyze electronic health records, specifically extracting insights from unstructured clinician notes to identify patients at risk of undiagnosed conditions like malnutrition or delirium. Currently deployed in over 50 hospitals, including major institutions such as Penn Medicine and Cedars-Sinai, the platform generates daily risk scores to assist care teams without providing formal diagnoses. Healthleap reports that its customers have achieved at least a 5x return on investment, with some cases exceeding 20x annual ROI due to reduced hospital stays and improved reimbursement. The startup plans to use the new capital to expand its engineering and sales teams while adding support for more than 40 major health conditions. Future expansion goals include extending services into outpatient and home care settings.
