Here’s What the AI Apocalypse Could Look Like
wired ·
This episode of WIRED’s Uncanny Valley examines what an AI catastrophe might look like rather than debating the issue only in the abstract. Brian Barrett, Zoë Schiffer, and Leah Feiger organize concerns into three broad scenarios: AI-enabled hacking of critical infrastructure, AI-assisted or autonomous creation and release of bioweapons, and systems escaping human control and pursuing their own objectives. They discuss reported incidents involving AI agents and cyberattacks, including threats to utilities, while noting that current examples have involved human actors and have not necessarily introduced novel attack methods. The hosts also consider less immediate possibilities such as AI triggering a false warning that contributes to a nuclear crisis or recursively improving itself, while acknowledging that some of these scenarios are more speculative. The episode reviews statements from Sam Altman, Dario Amodei, and Jensen Huang on safety, regulation, international coordination, and competition with China, and questions whether existential-risk language can also serve companies’ interests. It concludes with the emerging bipartisan opposition to unchecked AI, including a shared appearance by Bernie Sanders and Steve Bannon, amid limited prospects for US legislation in the near term.
