HiRO-ACEv2: Simulating extreme weather at 3 km resolution for a fraction of the cost
huggingface ·
Allen AI has introduced HiRO-ACEv2, an updated climate emulation system capable of simulating extreme weather events at a high resolution of 3 kilometers. The system combines ACE, which operates at a coarser 100-kilometer scale, with HiROv2, a new downscaling model that sharpens outputs to capture detailed rain, wind, and pressure data. This architecture allows the system to reproduce rare and intense weather phenomena with high accuracy, matching target simulations within 3% even for extremely infrequent events. Notably, HiRO-ACEv2 generates realistic tropical cyclones with proper eyes and rain bands, as well as strong winds flowing down mountain slopes. The full global simulation costs approximately one-three-hundredth of X-SHiELD, a traditional high-resolution atmospheric model, making it significantly more cost-effective. While current limitations restrict the system to climates similar to its training data, future updates aim to support warmer scenarios and additional variables like snow and ice. Researchers can access the models via downloadable files, tutorial notebooks, and an interactive web demo for visual comparison.
