Honda & Redwire Explore Robotic Lab System for Commercial Space Stations
aiinsider ·
Honda’s U.S. space development team is collaborating with Redwire to develop a robotic system designed for future commercial space stations. The proposed solution integrates Honda’s multi-fingered robotic hand with Redwire’s STAARK robotic arm and experiment locker technology. This combination aims to automate routine laboratory tasks such as sample handling, material transfers, and equipment operation in low Earth orbit. The initiative addresses the anticipated shift toward smaller crews and shorter astronaut stays on next-generation commercial stations. By leveraging human-like dexterity and precise positioning, the system seeks to reduce the operational burden on astronauts while improving efficiency. Honda has subjected its robotic hand to durability testing under various fingertip loads to ensure suitability for space applications. Redwire currently operates eight facilities aboard the International Space Station and specializes in in-space manufacturing technologies. Both companies plan to discuss potential applications with industry partners at the International Astronautical Congress in Antalya, Türkiye.
