I rented a car, and within hours, my driver's license was for sale

A security journalist rented a car and soon discovered that a high-resolution scan of his driver's license was being sold on a new dark web ID theft service called Nexus. The service reportedly offered over 153 million driver's licenses and other identification documents, including scans captured in infrared and ultraviolet spectrums that could help create counterfeit IDs. The FBI was reported to be investigating the breach. The scans appeared online within hours or a day after victims presented their IDs at rental companies or other businesses, suggesting near real-time access to data from a third-party scanning service. IDScan.net, a New Orleans-based scanning company with clients like Hertz and Planet13, was identified as a likely source and said it was investigating. The number of available licenses grew by almost 400,000 in 24 hours, indicating an ongoing breach. Nexus went dark shortly after the exposé was published, and the journalist noted that while his personal data had been breached before, the availability of UV and IR scans was more troubling.
