I Trained a Fly’s Brain to Generate WIRED Story Ideas
wired ·
Will Knight created a project called PitchFly by utilizing an open-source connectome of a fruit fly's brain to generate story ideas for WIRED. This digital drosophila, comprising 165,112 neurons, was trained on popular headlines from the past year to produce its own unique pitches. The resulting suggestions were described as delightfully absurd, with one example claiming that nobody has solved Donald Trump despite everyone wanting to cook. Knight clarifies that this is not a language model but rather a simulation that remixes patterns without understanding semantic meaning. Following the release of the connectome in September, numerous other experiments emerged, including projects where the fly brain played video games or attempted stock trading. These diverse applications highlight both the humorous potential and the philosophical questions regarding consciousness and ethics in AI replication. While some projects are likely spoofs, others serve serious scientific purposes in helping neuroscientists understand biological intelligence and neural circuitry. Ultimately, the experiment demonstrates how easily specialized models can be deployed, suggesting that even tiny biological simulations can offer valuable insights into artificial intelligence.
