Imperial College London Spinout Machenta Raises $40M in Seed Funding For Instant Learning Robots
aiinsider ·
Machenta, a spinout from Imperial College London, has secured $40 million in seed funding to develop robot foundation models capable of instant learning. Led by Creandum and Union Square Ventures, this investment marks the largest seed financing raised by a UK robotics startup. The company aims to enable robots to learn new tasks from a single demonstration, eliminating the need for repeated training or retraining. Machenta’s model is pre-trained entirely on simulated data, which reduces the reliance on large-scale real-world human demonstration datasets. This approach helps avoid practical and privacy constraints associated with physical data collection. The technology has already been demonstrated on various robot types, including humanoids, performing tasks such as packing and tidying. Founder Edward Johns stated that the goal is to allow robots to learn at the speed of humans. The funds will support scaling the model and expanding operations at a new laboratory in King’s Cross, London.
