Impossible Metals Reports its Eureka II Recovers Itself From the Ocean, Fully Autonomously
aiinsider ·
Impossible Metals reported that its Eureka II subsea vehicle completed an offshore demonstration in which it autonomously found and reconnected with its surface vessel. The vehicle used acoustic positioning to locate the vessel, visual guidance for final alignment, and an integrated mechanical SmartHook to attach itself. It then returned to the deck without an operator controlling the recovery process. The Pittsburgh-based company said the test addressed the challenge of reliably recovering autonomous subsea systems in real ocean conditions. Impossible Metals is developing Eureka II for repeated missions involving ocean resources, subsea infrastructure, and marine data collection. The company said autonomous recovery could reduce crew involvement and vessel time while enabling more frequent deployments.
