Instagram admits users often can't tell AI profiles from real people

Instagram has acknowledged that users often cannot distinguish AI-generated profiles from real people. In response, the platform is replacing its 'AI creator' tag with a new 'AI-generated profile' label. Meta explained that people dislike discovering a seemingly human profile is actually AI-generated. Profiles without this label will have their reach and recommendations throttled, though affected accounts can add the label or appeal via Account Status. Creators who use AI only as a tool are not required to use the label, and those who opt in retain full reach. The announcement comes amid growing concerns about AI-generated content on social media, with reports noting that 21 percent of YouTube Shorts are already AI-generated and many new websites are partly or fully AI-written.
