Instagram puts new limits on undisclosed AI profiles
techcrunch ·
Instagram announced it will change how it labels AI-generated profiles. The existing "AI creator" label is being renamed to "AI-generated profile" to make the disclosure clearer. Under the new policy, accounts featuring AI-generated people without proper labeling could see reduced reach, but creators who use the label won't be penalized. The label applies only to profiles that feature AI-generated people, not to general AI editing tools or creative tweaks. Instagram says the change responds to users who dislike discovering that a seemingly human profile is actually AI-generated. The move comes amid growing concerns about AI influencers, including a Wired investigation into AI-generated male profiles promoting the dating app Goose and a New York Times report on AI wellness personalities. It also follows backlash over an AI likeness feature and Meta's recent $18 billion settlement with U.S. states over teen safety effects on Facebook and Instagram.
