Instagram to Limit Reach of Unlabeled AI-Generated Profiles
aiinsider ·
Instagram announced it will change how it labels AI-generated profiles by renaming its existing 'AI creator' label to 'AI-generated profile,' aiming to make disclosures clearer. Under the new policy, creators who fail to properly label such profiles may see reduced reach, while those who use the label correctly will not face penalties. The label is not required for general AI-assisted creative work like photo editing or caption polishing, but it applies when a featured person is generated or substantially created by AI. Instagram said the change responds to growing user frustration with profiles that seem human but are entirely AI-generated. The move comes amid broader concerns about AI influencers, including a network of AI accounts linked to the dating app Goose and AI-generated wellness personalities promoting health claims and supplements. This announcement follows backlash over a Meta AI image tool that allowed use of others' likenesses, which was later removed, and comes shortly after Meta's $18 billion settlement with U.S. states over child safety concerns.
