Introducing SynthID Bio
deepmind ·
DeepMind has introduced SynthID Bio, a new watermarking technology designed for synthetic biology that embeds imperceptible signatures directly into biological codes. This system ensures that AI-generated proteins and structures remain verifiable even after physical synthesis, without compromising their biological function or binding affinity. The tool adapts to different data types by subtly guiding amino acid choices and adjusting atomic coordinates in predicted 3D models like those from AlphaFold 3. By linking designs to their model developers, SynthID Bio aims to strengthen biosecurity and prevent the pollution of public databases with mislabeled AI data. It offers an automated verification signal for DNA synthesis providers, helping them streamline screening processes against known threats. Early testing confirmed that watermarked protein binders matched the performance of unwatermarked versions across several targets. The research team is also exploring applications for more complex objects, such as bacteriophage genomes, in collaboration with academic partners.
