Introducing WeatherNext 3, our most advanced and accurate global weather AI model
deepmind ·
Google DeepMind and Google Research have launched WeatherNext 3, described as their most advanced and accurate global weather AI model. Unlike traditional models that rely on physics simulations, it learns directly from real-time geostationary satellite data, producing forecasts every hour at up to 5-kilometer resolution—about five times sharper than its predecessor. The model also improves precipitation forecasting by training on high-quality satellite and radar data, achieving significant accuracy gains over baseline methods. It includes variables for clean energy planning, such as turbine-height wind speeds and solar radiation. WeatherNext 3 is now integrated into Google Search, Maps, Gemini, Google Maps Platform, and Cloud, making improved forecasts available to billions of users. The model is particularly beneficial for regions like Latin America, Africa, and Asia-Pacific that previously lacked access to high-resolution forecasting due to supercomputing costs.
