Investing in the public benefit
anthropic ·
Anthropic has announced the creation of the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a new entity designed to dedicate a growing portion of the company's equity to public good initiatives. Initially, 5% of Anthropic’s shares will be committed to the fund, with an additional 2% added for every 50% increase in the company's value above a set baseline. This structure allows the fund to operate with greater flexibility than traditional nonprofits, enabling large donations or direct distributions to specific populations. The initiative addresses potential labor market instability caused by AI, building on Anthropic's existing $200 million commitment to studying these impacts. Unlike executive compensation models that escalate with growth, this approach directs increasing equity stakes toward societal benefit rather than individual enrichment. Combined with previous pledges from co-founders and employee matching programs, approximately 20% of Anthropic shares are now dedicated to public good efforts. The fund is established as a wholly-owned LLC to allow adjustability between different forms of giving while prohibiting the use of equity for lobbying or political contributions.
