Italy’s Fincantieri to Invest Nearly $100M in Robotics, Physical AI for Shipyards
aiinsider ·
Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri plans to invest nearly $100 million by 2030 to integrate robotics, physical AI, and automation into its operations. This funding supports the BOOST² – The Shipyard of the Future program, which aims to enhance efficiency and safety across 13 global shipyards. The initiative is transitioning from experimental phases to broader industrial deployment, involving over 450 employees. Key technologies include collaborative robots, digital twins, smart supply-chain systems, and additive manufacturing. CEO Pierroberto Folgiero emphasized that embedding AI into physical processes is becoming a critical competitive factor in manufacturing. To support this transition, Fincantieri is leveraging an Open Innovation strategy by partnering with startups and technology firms. Additionally, the company will host a Dual-Use Hackathon in Silicon Valley to identify new technologies for future shipyard applications.
