aiinsider ·
Japan's telecommunications giant KDDI has officially launched Elyza Robotics, a new subsidiary dedicated to advancing physical AI technologies. The company plans to invest approximately $190 million in research and development with the goal of deploying over 1,000 robots by fiscal year 2030. Elyza Robotics combines its parent company's foundation-model expertise with KDDI's extensive communications infrastructure and real-world operational experience. Initial deployments will focus on sectors such as retail, logistics, and manufacturing, utilizing industrial robots, quadrupeds, and humanoids for tasks like inventory management and precision work. To support these efforts, KDDI intends to build an organization comprising more than 300 specialists based in Tokyo. The initiative addresses Japan's anticipated labor shortages in physical industries projected through 2040. Future expansion plans include applying these robotic solutions to agriculture and construction sectors.
