Kimi-maker Moonshot AI targets $2 billion in annual revenue
techcrunch ·
Moonshot AI, a prominent Chinese AI lab, is aiming for $2 billion in annualized revenue by the end of the year, according to a Bloomberg report cited by TechCrunch. That target would double the revenue run rate the company reportedly had in August. The goal follows the summer release of its K3 model, which has driven significant usage despite a slight decline in recent months. OpenRouter data currently shows K3 models generating as many as 300 billion tokens per day. Moonshot’s projected revenue remains much smaller than OpenAI’s and Anthropic’s, which recent reports placed at $40 billion and $65 billion, respectively. Because Moonshot makes its model weights freely available, it has much lower margins than closed-weight competitors, though the projections suggest open-weight AI can still generate revenue. Separately, Anthropic has accused Moonshot of a long-running distillation campaign involving nearly 300,000 requests routed from Kimi to Claude Opus and more than 23 million responses collected for training.
