LawZero Receives a Commitment of Up to $300M in Joint Funding from Canada and Germany
aiinsider ·
Canada and Germany have announced a joint funding commitment of up to CAD 300 million for LawZero, a Montréal-based nonprofit founded by Yoshua Bengio. The funding is intended to advance LawZero’s safe-by-design Scientist AI approach, expand its international research team, and support secure computing infrastructure. LawZero plans to open a Berlin office and establish dedicated sovereign compute capacity in Canada with Hypertec and 5C. Scientist AI is designed to reason transparently and produce evidence-based outputs without pursuing goals of its own, unlike autonomous frontier AI systems. LawZero says the approach could provide guardrails for current frontier models, accelerate scientific discovery, and improve understanding of AI risks. Initially incubated at Mila, the organization is governed by an independent board and advisory council and is backed by philanthropic and government funding.
