LitPivot: Developing research ideas through dynamic contextualization within the literature landscape
huggingface ·
LitPivot is a new system developed by Allen AI and the University of Pennsylvania to assist researchers in navigating literature-initiated pivots during early-stage ideation. The tool helps users segment their research proposals into specific facets, such as problem statements, contributions, and evaluation plans, allowing for targeted literature review. By retrieving relevant papers through Asta Paper Finder, LitPivot provides critiques supported by excerpts and suggests concrete revisions based on existing gaps in the field. In a study involving 17 researchers, participants using LitPivot produced ideas that domain experts rated as better grounded in literature compared to those created with standard text editors and AI chat tools. Users also reported feeling that their revised ideas were more novel and useful, alongside a stronger understanding of the surrounding academic landscape. The system allows researchers to accept, edit, or reject suggestions and dynamically rerank literature as their proposal evolves, ensuring consistency across different parts of the draft. These findings suggest that LitPivot effectively supports both the initial exploration of new concepts and the refinement of mature research directions. The paper detailing this work will be presented at UIST 2026.
