M&T Bank expands enterprise AI after years of technology overhaul

M&T Bank has expanded enterprise use of generative AI, deploying Microsoft Copilot to more than 15,000 employees, with a 2025 report citing 16,000 of about 22,000 staff. The tools are used for tasks such as summarising call-centre conversations, drafting emails and reports, generating code, and flagging portfolio risks and customer needs, with human review still required. Before the wide rollout, M&T blocked access to public large language models out of concern that employees might enter confidential information, then piloted Copilot with about 800 employees. The deployment builds on a technology overhaul that began in 2018, during which the bank shifted most technology work in-house, cut outages by more than 80%, and increased technology spending above $1.2bn in 2025. M&T also developed data-lineage and governance programmes, a Data Academy, and an internal repository called Edison to support responsible AI use. Other large U.S. banks, such as JPMorganChase and Bank of America, are similarly expanding generative AI across their workforces.
