Massachusetts hits data centers with new clean power rules
techcrunch ·
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey issued an executive order requiring data centers larger than 25 megawatts to supply their own clean power or pay into a ratepayer protection fund. The order also directs communities to avoid signing non-disclosure agreements and pauses applications for a data center sales tax exemption. State officials clarified that data centers must meet 100% of their electricity demand with clean energy, exceeding the standard applied to other industries. This makes Massachusetts the third state in recent months to impose new restrictions on data center development, following similar moves in Texas and New York. The tech industry is beginning to push back, with a pro-AI political group funding advertisements in battleground states.
