MassRobotics Surveys Companies on FCC Robotics Ruling
aiinsider ·
MassRobotics conducted a survey to assess how companies view the FCC's July 2026 decision to add foreign-produced advanced robotics devices to its Covered List. Based on 14 responses from businesses ranging from solo founders to firms with over 200 employees, the impact largely depended on where companies manufacture and source components. Companies manufacturing mostly or entirely in the U.S. generally saw the rule as beneficial, while those relying on overseas production reported neutral or negative effects. The latter group cited motors, sensors, power supplies/DC-DC converters, and robot arms as difficult or costly to source domestically, and some said onshoring was not feasible. On average, the rule affected product roadmaps more than fundraising, but fundraising showed the widest extremes, including one company possibly relocating its headquarters. Respondents commonly requested a vetted domestic supplier network, clearer regulatory guidance, and more time to adjust supply chains, while some called for the rule's withdrawal. Concerns included uncertainty around the FCC's Conditional Approval process, a desire to distinguish allied countries from China, and possible Chinese retaliation. Several already-compliant companies said they needed no support and viewed the policy as a competitive advantage.
